Gregsway builds his off-grid cabin with Joris Ide

From global roads to off-grid roots

From world traveler to creator

Grégoire Kengen, better known as Gregsway, is a Belgian travel vlogger, photographer, and creator who has turned adventure into part of his everyday life. What started as road trips on two wheels - from a solo Vespa ride through Germany to crossing Sri Lanka in a tuk-tuk - developed into travels all over the world.

Along the way, he discovered a new interest: building things himself. On his YouTube channel, he shows how he tackles projects step by step without a professional construction background, moving toward a lifestyle that is more autonomous and hands-on.

A luxury cabin in the heart of nature

For his new project - a self-built luxury cabin in a remote location - Gregsway designed two separate living modules connected by a translucent porch at the center. He chose the JI 18-076-988 corrugated steel sheet in RAL 9006 (grey-silver) for the roof, specifically for its practical and utilitarian look.

The material recalls the straightforward construction of high-altitude shelters, like those found in Himalayan villages. It delivers strength and weather resistance without unnecessary sophistication - a good match for an off-grid build.

To connect the two separate buildings, he seamlessly transitioned to translucent polyester sheets (same geometry as the JI 18-076-988) on the exterior. These create a covered area that works both as a passageway and as a porch - a sheltered outdoor space where he can spend time while protected from the weather, still benefiting from natural light.

The result is a straightforward, durable envelope that performs well in natural surroundings and maintains a simple, grounded architectural language.

Smart and durable building with steel

Because Gregsway is building without heavy infrastructure, easy installation was an important factor. The single skin sheet roofing solutions from Joris Ide are lightweight, practical to handle, and therefore perfectly suiting a solo DIY project  in a remote location.

A building journey that reflects true independence

Gregsway’s off-grid cabin perfectly illustrates how thoughtful design, practical material choices, and a hands-on mindset can come together to create something both functional and inspiring. His project shows that even in remote conditions, building with confidence is possible when materials are reliable, lightweight, and easy to work with.

At Joris Ide, we’re proud that our roofing solutions supported his vision - proving once again that steel can be a powerful ally for creative, durable, and independent building projects. Whether for professionals or adventurous self-builders, the right envelope can turn bold ideas into lasting structures.
