The Agoria Solar Team took on the Sasol Solar Challenge

A unique adventure in South Africa

Sponsored by Joris Ide, the Agoria Solar Team and their innovative solar car finished in second place after an eventful first participation in Sasol Solar Challenge 2022.

The Sasol Solar Challenge is a 5 000km race for solar powered vehicle in South Africa. It was the first time that the students from KU Leuven University contested in that challenge. Already on the first day, an unexpected unevenness in the road caused the solar car to skid and the side scraped against the ground. On the last night, the solar panel of the BluePoint Atlas sustained damage due to an action by an inexperienced team member of a rival team. Among other twists and turns, a sudden technical defect in their battery caused them to continue only at reduced speed.

A bumpy road

Despite all the challenges, the Joris Ide sponsored team did manage to finish the race after all and rank in second position. With the experience they gained during this challenge, the students will now start building a new solar car, which they will take to the world championships in Australia next year.

"It was a challenging and long race that took its toll, but we learnt a lot"
